Aurora over Lincoln

Postby meteorgw » Mon Dec 21, 2015 2:27 pm

Last night at about 9.15 I was outside taking some test shots to find the image scale of the Canon 1100D standard lens at 55mm. Reviewing the results I noticed some purple bands coming up from the bottom and above those a hit of a green band along the top. I noticed nothing of these by eye, but when I looked again there was a bright pale green band about 10 degrees above the north horizon over Lincoln. I had just assumed it was cloud at first and was not entirely convinced. Usually from Bassingham it is the orange aurora of the Hykeham and Lincoln streetlighting, but that was not present, presumably heavy rain shower earlier on had cleared the air. A while later I received an email from the SPA with an aurora alert. Too late, I could see nothing by then!

I was outside from about 21:00 last night until 2:30 this morning saw nothing of it - but I see nothing but trees to the NW anyway and was looking S/SE most of the night anyway.

Just goes to show we do get a look-in now and then.

You got it ..... I looked but my northern horizon is obscured. Also, it occurred early in the evening.

Well done!
